- Goal is to improve services for students through efforts of families and schools working together as equal partners who share resources, decisions, and responsibilities
- Impact of family involvement in the education of their children can have a significant, positive impact on a student achievement in terms of attendance, more positive attitudes, better grades, increase motivation and higher test scores
- There are federal laws that legally mandate for family involvement (include sections addressing the need for parental involvement)

Family
- Characteristics of Family
- Many families are single-parent families, usually headed by a mother
- Single-parent families headed by mothers often low-income families
- Different family structures, such as gay or lesbian couples, are more prevalent
- Many families do not speak English as their primary language
- Many families have two working parents
- Cultural diversity among families is much greater
- Teachers being able to adjust/accommodate for families to culturally relevant teaching
- When working with families that are not considered a traditional family unit, educators must be aware of possible personal biases and avoid actions based on this bias
- To do otherwise would be unethical/could have negative impact on students
- The family life cycle refers to the development changes in the family unit that occurs over time to accommodate the changes in the needs of family members
- Knowing that the changes occur most in most families transition from one stage to the next (ages 5-12, 12-21, and 21+)
